Dries van Noten's take on grunge

Oh yes, finally here it is, a bit of grunge! G and myself have been talking about how we'd love a big 90's grunge revival and sourcing all sorts of memorabilia and inspiration from the good old 90's. Although the trend has not become the big hit we crossed our fingers for in the catwalk, we have to admit it is not that hard to find some bits and pieces on the high street (and the back of your closet) and put together a Gwen Stefani-ish look of this sort >>

So, since I know G's absolutely crazy about the 90's and she breathes it every day, including some shocking music selections (la la la, love you G) and she'd put together the best little How-To-Do-90's in the entire internet, I'm gona do my snob job and look for that special designer who has the guts to put grungy-dyke-looking clothes on the catwalk. This time I'm talking about Dries Van Noten, who last season (last season being Spring, so actually..this season in human time, not fashion time) and even this season (and yes, by this season I know mean Autumn in fashion timescale!) has incorporated a 90´s vibe into his collections. And tartan, lots of it. I mean it. So much tartan. Even on silk - yes yes! Where there isn't actual tartan, there is printed tartan pattern on other fabrics!

Back to Drie Van Noten's take on grunge: there is a catch. (I mean come on people, of coure there is a catch, we're talking high fashion here, not costume reproductions! If he wanted to invent 90's grunge he'd be 20 years late now!) The styling is Oh So Femenine it is almost hard to see past the red lipstick and diva sunglasses sometimes. Oh well. In all honesty I still love it! dHave a look at this selection :)

Having this as the closing runway look is just..no words :') Tears running down my eyes of emotion for this reinvented finale gown. This is how I'd imagine Penny Lane dressed for her improvised wedding by the seaside cliffs if there was ever a sequel to Almost Famous... I mean how come NOBODY has done a sequel yet?! After watching the extended cut repeatedly I genuinely bonded with the characters, and then PUFF they just went away!

So, all in all, hope you've had a blast down memory lane like I have looking at DvN's latest collections...from No Doubt to young Kate Hudson, whimsical woodcutter or formerly punk chick hiding her tartan under her older boyfriend's sweater, being taken away by every look can only mean one thing, and that's a job well done putting together a show!

x S
